Building With Brick in Colonial Williamsburg

0

On our recent visit to Colonial Williamsburg, we saw lots of brick. Bricks were the paver of choice throughout the historic area, not to mention the surrounding neighborhoods and the Visitor’s Center. At least half of the buildings in the historic area are brick, including the multi-story Governor’s Palace and the Capitol. The clapboard homes and outbuildings all have brick fireplaces with massive chimneys. All the basement walls were brick, too. There is brick everywhere.

Catalpa Conundrum

0

As I write this, the many catalpa trees surrounding our farmyard are raining leaves. Last night we had our first frost, an occasion that causes all the catalpas to simultaneously shed all their leaves the very next day. Someone, perhaps a hundred years ago, planted evenly-spaced catalpa trees all along our farm lane and all around our farmyard. These trees are a blessing and a curse; why weren’t oaks or maples planted instead?

Touring Destination Gardens

Marjorie and I spent the first two weeks of September on a road trip, touring some of our favorite gardens and historic sites. It was a vacation of sorts, but also a sentimental journey, and a voyage of discovery that we intend to share with our readers in the coming months.
