Scioto County Local Emergency Planning Committee in cooperation with local emergency response agencies will hold its annual hazardous materials exercise on Saturday, May 4, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. The exercise will be at the Minford Fire Department, 8484 Ohio 335.

Ohio law requires local LEPC’s to conduct annual exercises designed to evaluate each county’s Chemical Emergency Response and Preparedness (Hazmat) Plan. This year’s event will be a tabletop exercise, which is a verbal walk-through or discussion on how emergency agencies would respond to a hazmat scenario.

A tabletop exercise requires the demonstration of at least three and no more than five of the 13 exercise objectives developed by the State Emergency Response Commission based on the criteria each county’s hazmat plan must address.

The objectives for the Scioto County LEPC Tabletop exercise includes incident assessment, incident command, response personnel safety, and emergency public information.

Organizations expected to participate in the exercise include: the Minford Fire Department and EMS, Jefferson Township Fire Department, Minford Local School District, The Ohio and Scioto County emergency management agencies, Scioto County Sheriff’s Office, Ohio State Highway Patrol, Ohio Department of Transportation, The Gateway Group, American Red Cross, Ohio EPA, and the Scioto County Health Department.
