The 14th Street Community Center is ready to invite the community out for the 7th Annual Soul Food and Music Festival: Celebrity Chef Edition, pulling together the finishing touches in the final month for an event looked forward to by many.

“The Soul Food and Music Festival will offer the community a family friendly event, phenomenal soul food, Mikey Mike and The Big Unit, and opportunity to support the 14th Street Community Center,” Drew Carter explained. “The community will have a fun time eating delicious foods and enjoying an incredible band.”

To add a new flavor to the event, they’ve added the celebrity chef aspect. Carter is optimistic about the endeavor.

“We have about ten or more chefs representing different organizations around the area, which will bring a little more excitement to the fundraiser challenge and more food,” Carter said. “I’m feeling optimistic and positive about the celebrity chef aspect to this fundraiser.”

The funding raised will support efforts to raise a new generation of leaders at the 14th Street Community Center. They’re currently accepting sponsorships ranging from $1,000-$10,000 for the event. Admission to the function is $50. The 14th Street Community Center is at 1222 14th Street and will be held November 9 at 6 p.m.

According to their website, “We began in the minds and hearts of caring individuals, and it is out of their convictions, ideas and tenacity that our mission unfolds. The 14th Street Community Center was built at the request of concerned residents in the 1940s. Its purpose at the time was to provide recreational opportunities for children residing within the Farley Square Housing Project. The 14th Street Community Center was founded in 1942 and is located in the heart of the African American community in Portsmouth, Ohio.

Today, the Center serves more than 1,200 individuals from diverse backgrounds and neighborhoods by offering free educational and recreational programs and is actively working to extend our operations to our 17th Street Learning Annex, where completed renovations will allow us to serve the Kendall Heights Housing Complex and surrounding community.”

Carter is passionate about the center and believes the upcoming festival is paramount to their success.

“This event is one of the center’s big fundraisers that helps keep our doors open,” Carter explained. “It also brings some diversity to the cuisine in our area. It offers our community a chance to visit the 14th Street Community Center for a fun and exciting time.”
