Jesus Prom set for April 21

PORTSMOUTH- This year’s Jesus Prom at Cornerstone Church is welcoming everyone to have a good time.

The Jesus Prom offers a prom experience for those who sometimes don’t get one or haven’t had one. Friends and neighbors with disabilities of any kind are welcome to celebrate with a spring fling full of fun and dancing.

“We will have a DJ and they’ll have an opportunity to get their pictures taken. Everybody has a great time,” said organizer Laura Womack. “They will have to provide their own transportation.”

This year’s theme will be a Hawaiian luau, but promgoers can wear whatever attire they want.

The concept of a Jesus Prom began more than 20 years ago at Southland Church in Lexington, Ky. It’s about having fun and fellowship and dancing. This is the sixth year for the event in Portsmouth.

Flyers have been sent out, including to area nursing facilities. There is no registration required, all those who plan to attend can simply show up and dance the night away.

There is still a need for volunteers, as well. Red carpet walkers, dancers, set up, and break down helpers are needed. Those interested can contact organizers by way of the Facebook group: Jesus Prom 23.
