PORTSMOUTH — Area students will display their artwork on May 12 during the “Visually Literate” High School Art Exhibition in the Appleton Gallery at Shawnee State University in Portsmouth, Ohio.

More than 130 entries were submitted for judging to become part of the 50-piece exhibition. There are seven categories, including black & white drawing, color drawing, painting, sculpture, mixed media, utilitarian three-dimensional work, and photography, graphic arts and digital media.

Entries were received from Clay, East, Green, Minford, New Boston, Oak Hill, Northwest, Portsmouth, South Webster, Valley, West, and Wheelersburg schools.

The judge for the show was Benjy Davies, chair of the School of Arts and Letters and professor of studio art at University of Rio Grande.

“I’ve been really impressed with the work the students do in that area,” Davies said. “It was interesting to see how much the culture of southern Ohio came through in the work. There were themes like family and community, and especially because they are young high school artists you could see a lot of ideas about identity as young people are trying to establish who they are and working through those issues. There was also a lot of playful and energetic fun work in there. It was nice to see them still being kids while trying to figure out how to be adults.”

The exhibit will be on display May 12-19 in the Appleton Gallery — on the second floor of the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts at Shawnee State University. There will be a closing reception and Awards Ceremony for the student artists at the college on Thursday, May 19, at 5:30 p.m., with the awards ceremony beginning at 6 p.m.

Students who participated in The Memory Project this year will also be recognized during the reception. Light refreshments will be provided and admission is free to the public.

This event is coordinated by Sharee Price of South Central Ohio Educational Service Center and is sponsored by Boneyfiddle Arts Center, Gary and Marilyn Hairston, Richard D. Marting Foundation, Portsmouth Area Arts Council, Rotary Club of Portsmouth, Southern Ohio Museum, Scioto Foundation, Shawnee Art and Hobby Supplies, Shawnee State University, Southern Ohio Medical Center, and Wagner Rental and Supply.
