The Portsmouth Public Library continued a 15-year tradition this year, gathering toys for local children to receive this holiday season. This year’s collection proved to be a success, reaching numbers previous drives hadn’t in the 14 years of holiday cheer.

Katie Williams, publicity and program manager at Portsmouth Public Library, said that the program was an imperatively one that collected 243 toys.

The Local History Department of the Portsmouth Public Library held the drive, with each branch participating.

“The staff of the Local History Department are in charge of that job and they really push it, not only the patrons, but also the staff, which is really awesome,” Williams said. “We had 34 staff members participating this year, as well as 19 patrons.”

Each toy was put in a display case, before getting delivered to the Scioto County Children Services. Williams said that the display of toys only made people want to give more. She also explained that it raised holiday cheer in the library, as people passed by and took in the generosity.

“It was awesome,” Williams said. “We feel it is a great way to give back to the community and to those who are less fortunate. It is also a great way for our patrons and staff to come together to do a nice thing like this.”

Williams said the library offers many holiday events this time of year, but she felt this one was a perfect example of what the season is about.

“Whenever Children Services came to pick up the toys, it was exciting to see the looks of astonishment on their faces. We were thrilled,” Williams said. “At one point, we were concerned about fitting all the gifts in their vehicle.”

Williams explained that the toy drive is only one way the library integrates itself in the community and she is proud to work for an organization that is fundamentally about supporting her community.
