CINCINNATI (AP) — Christian Yelich hit a two-run homer, and Wade Miley came off the injured list to pitch four innings of one-hit ball, to lift the Milwaukee Brewers to a 7-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds in a steady rain on Wednesday night.
The 37-year-old Miley started the season on in the injured list because of pain in his throwing shoulder.
He was activated before the game on Wednesday, and got the nod because so many of Milwaukee’s top pitchers are ailing.
Miley, who threw a no-hitter when he was with the Reds in 2021, was limited to 52 pitches and allowed just a run and a hit.
Brewers manager Pat Murphy said Miley “got a look at his future.”
“He was throwing the ball great. He gave us a huge lift,” Murphy said. “Just his tempo and the way he controlled the game early gave us breathing room.”
Miley said he still felt good when he exited the game.
“It was probably a smart thing to do to come out right there,” he said. “I felt I probably could have stayed in, but it was probably what’s best for us. I was just excited to get back out there and compete.”
Bryse Wilson (1-0) pitched the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to get win.
He allowed a run and three hits.
“We knew Wade was a little bit short today, so for me to go out be able to cover the three was nice,” Wilson said. “It helps when the offense puts up seven (runs) and gives us a little cushion.”
Blake Perkins also homered for the Brewers.
William Conteras singled home two as part of Milwaukee’s three-run second inning, and Jackson Chourio also had two RBIs.
With the two-run shot in the first inning, Yelich had seven RBIs in the first three games of the series.
Reds starter Hunter Greene (0-1) allowed six earned runs and six hits through six innings.
He struck out nine, but allowed the homers to Yelich and Perkins.
“Hunter had a good fastball, but his slider was a little inconsistent,” Reds manager David Bell said. “That’s a big pitch for Hunter. He gave us six innings on what was not his best night.”
Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz rocketed a solo homer to left in the fifth inning that came off the bat at 110.4 mph.
De La Cruz has hits in 11 of 12 games this season, and has reached base in 17 consecutive games dating back to Sept. 26.
The game initially was delayed an hour and 50 minutes because of heavy rain.

Brewers: RHP Kevin Herget was sent back to Triple-A Nashville to make roster room for Miley. … Catcher Jefferson Quero, the No. 3 prospect in the Brewers farm system, will have season-ending surgery for a torn labrum. Recovery time is expected to be nine months.

CINCINNATI (AP) — The finale of the Cincinnati Reds series with the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday afternoon was postponed because of heavy rain in Cincinnati.
The game will be made up as the first game of a split doubleheader on Aug. 30.
Wednesday night’s game was delayed by nearly two hours, and then played in a steady rain throughout.
The Brewers won 7-2 behind a two-run homer by Christian Yelich and four solid innings from Wade Miley, who came off the disabled list to start.
Miley, who pitched a no-hitter for the Reds in 2021, began the season on the injured list with shoulder problems.
The Brewers won 9-5 on Tuesday night, and the Reds took the Monday opener 10-8.
The Reds began a series on Friday night with the reeling White Sox in Chicago.
