SSU hosting race events

PORTSMOUTH — Shawnee State University is hosting its cross country racing series once again this summer, as it kicks off Thursday, June 23, 2016 at Earl Thomas Conley Park in West Portsmouth, Ohio.

The racing series is aimed to be open to anyone to attend, while being one of the best priced in southern Ohio.

“The entry fees for the races are pretty cheap,” said organizer and Shawnee Men’s Cross Country Coach Eric Putnam. “I really wanted to provide a race for people that was inexpensive. I feel like 5Ks are too much money these days.”

Entry fees to each race are just five dollars, or ten if you wish to purchase a shirt. The one mile fun run starts at 7:40 p.m., while the 5K races start at 7:00 p.m.

Registration for both events begins at 5:30 p.m.

Putnam not only wanted the community to be able to attend a frugally priced race, but also wanted to encourage residents to visit the park.

“I wanted to do something good for the community,” explains Putnam. “I want folks to get out to the park. The guys out there do such a great job of taking care of the place and it is very beautiful.”

Awards will be given out to the top five finishers for both men and women.

There will be races two more days as well, July 14, and August 13, 2016. Awards will be given out to the top 15 finishers of each gender during the last race.

The races are on a cross country course and are open to all runners.

Earl Thomas Conley (Riverside) Park is located about four miles west of Portsmouth on State Route 52. The course is flat and will take place entirely on grass and dirt. Restrooms are available as well as showers on campus. Individuals using a GPS to navigate to the park should use address 15888 State Route 52, West Portsmouth, Ohio 45663.

Additional information can be obtained by calling Putnam at 740-351-3604 or via email at [email protected] to have any questions or concerns addressed.
