The honor and respect of United States military veterans is sustained at the Boneyfiddle Military Museum, Inc. (BMM) located at 421 Front Street in Portsmouth. The Museum had 200 visitors walk through the doors during the Memorial Day weekend this year.
Mike Russell, curator of BMM, said remembrance of the sacrifices of military veterans is paramount.
“This is Museum is important so that our veterans, and our veterans families know that their sacrifices are not forgotten,” Russell said. “We had a really good turnout over the Memorial Day weekend, with 200 people that came out to visit the Museum, and we are very well pleased. Everyone thought the Museum was very respectful, and honored the service of our veterans. It was a really nice weekend.”
Two veterans recently made a trip to BMM, according to Russell. Bruce Distal who is a Marine Corps Vietnam War veteran, recently visited BMM, and viewed his own Vietnam uniform as well as his mother’s World War II Army Air Force uniform. World War II veteran Leroy Easter also made a visit, whose Navy combat engineer uniform is on display at BMM.
Russell is an active member of the National Guard, but ensures that tours to BMM are always possible.
“For anyone that would like a tour of the Museum, they can call or email me,” he said. “With me being in the National Guard, I am not here every weekend, but if they let me know that they want to come down and take a tour I can make arrangements for them when I am not here.”
Concerning donation of military memorabilia, Russell said he will take great care.
