Offensive struggles cost SSU in defeat

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – After falling behind 11-4 in the first quarter, the Bears were never able to establish themselves on the offensive end, as they fell to the visiting Saints of Thomas More College, 87-63, Tuesday evening at Frank & Janis Waller Gymnasium.

Ali Zieverink (SR/West Chester, Ohio) finished the game with a team-leading 27 points and 13 rebounds. The Bears suffered on the defensive end giving up 10 transition points while not scoring any of their own.

SSU fell behind early in the contest, as the visiting Saints opened up the contest on an 11-4 run. The Bears had trouble getting any shots to fall, shooting 26.7 percent in the first quarter. Shawnee State’s scoring in the first half came mostly from Zieverink with 4 points in the first quarter. At the end of quarter number one, the Bears trailed by a score of 22-9.

Shawnee State tried to fight back in the second quarter as their shooting percentage improved to 38 percent, but the Saints answered, going on a 10-2 run with 1:08 remaining in the half. The Bears were trailing by a score of 40-26 at the half.

The third quarter was a battle as, each time SSU would score, Thomas More answered. The Bears were able to outscore the Saints 21-20, but it was not enough to erase the deficit.

Thanks to Zieverink, Shawnee State was able to outscore their opponents 10-8 in the paint during the fourth quarter, but as the final buzzer sounded Shawnee was handed a 87-63 defeat.

Three Bears finished with point totals in double figures including Zieverink’s 27, Ashton Lovely (FR/Jamestown, Ohio)’s 14 and Madison Ridout (SO/Jackson, Ohio)’s 11 points

The Shawnee State Women’s basketball team will return to action this Saturday, Feb. 20th, against Kentucky Christian University. The game is scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m. at Frank & Janis Waller Gymnasium.
