SSU Sociology Club paints Before I Die wall

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – The Shawnee State University’s Sociology Club has painted a Before I Die wall.

The wall was originally created by Candy Chang, an artist from New Orleans, after experiencing deep depression from losing a loved one. After receiving permission, Chang painted the side of an abandoned house in her neighborhood with the sentence, “Before I die I want to _ .” It was created to serve as an anonymous place to restore perspective and share intimately with neighbors while remaining an introvert. Anyone passing by could pick up a piece of chalk to share his or her personal aspirations. By the next day, the wall was full of responses and continued to grow.

After several photos were posted online, the images spread and Chang received hundreds of messages from people wanting to create a similar wall with their community. Chang then created a website with resources and now over 1,000 Before I Die walls have been created in 35 languages and over 70 countries around the world.

The wall painted by the SSU Sociology Club is located on the Daehler Building on Second Street.
