ND win in double OT, 58-51

PORTSMOUTH – Whenever Notre Dame High School and Glenwood High School compete against each other on the hardwood everyone in attendance knows they’re going to get their money’s worth, and Thursday night was no different. The Lady Titans and Lady Tigers played so tough four quarters couldn’t decide a victor. In fact, overtime wasn’t enough either, as the two SOC rivals went to double overtime to decide what school would come out on top.

Tied, 41-41, at the end of regulation, and then tied again, 47-47, at the end of overtime, it would take a second overtime period before the Notre Dame Lady Titans could defeat the Glenwood Lady Tigers, 58-51.

“New Boston, the way they match up with us, it’s a tough matchup for us,” Lady Titans Basketball coach J.D. McKenzie said. “They’re a great team, and they have some really great players.”

Overtime is no uncharted territory for Notre Dame and Glenwood. Regulation time couldn’t determine a winner earlier this season, when the two teams met at Glenwood High School.

At first the game looked like it may be all Glenwood, as Notre Dame hit a few road blocks right after tipoff.

“We couldn’t have gotten off to a worse start, and they probably couldn’t have gotten off to a better start,” McKenzie said.

After the first quarter, Glenwood held a 13-point lead over Notre Dame, leading 19-6.

“I wasn’t upset at the girls,” McKenzie said. “I just said, ‘hey, we gotta change things up, and we have to get some stops.’ That’s what we did.”

The second quarter was a near complete reversal of the first. Notre Dame picked up momentum, and Glenwood began to have troubles. The Lady Tigers were limited to only two points in the quarter, while the Lady Titans scored 12.

By halftime, Glenwood’s lead had nearly completely disappeared, as the Lady Tigers led 21-18.

McKenzie’s squad continued to use their momentum, and had another 12-point quarter, while continuing to stifle the Glenwood offense, but not as effectively. By the end of the third, Glenwood had lost their lead, trailing Notre Dame by a single point, 30-29.

The fourth quarter was simply amazing, as both teams would trade the lead in the first two minutes of the quarter. The Lady Titans would make a short run, and gain a seven point lead on the Lady Tigers, 38-31, with just under five minutes left to play.

Glenwood wasn’t done though, Mariah Buckley and Eden Howard stepped up and each sank a three-pointer to pull the Lady Tigers to within one point of the Lady Titans, 38-37, with 3:27 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

The Lady Tigers would then miss five straight free throws, before Buckley makes one to tie the game, 38-38.

Notre Dame’s Katie Dettwiller would be fouled by Glenwood’s Kaylee Stone, which sent Dettwiller to the line, where she would give Notre Dame a two point lead, 40-38, hitting both free throw attempts.

Hagen Schaefer would increase Notre Dame’s lead, 41-38, after hitting a free throw with less than a minute left in the fourth quarter.

Glenwood would tie the game, 41-41, with only 23.6 seconds remaining after Cammy Oiler hit a three-pointer.

After the end of regulation still tied, 41-41, both teams prepared for overtime.

“They don’t quit,” McKenzie said in a comment about Glenwood. “I was proud of my girls, they didn’t quit. We could have packed it up when we were down, but we didn’t. Those overtimes, if you’re on defense, you have to get a stop, and on offense you’re looking to get a quick score.”

In overtime, Notre Dame gained a quick four point lead, 45-41, after Ragen Kayser and Dettwiller each get a quick basket.

Glenwood would respond with a run of their own, scoring off a free throw by Ali Hamilton, and then two scores by Buckley, giving the Lady Tigers a 46-45 lead with 1:15 left in overtime.

Notre Dame’s Schaefer would tie the game with a free throw after drawing a foul from Glenwood’s Kaylee Stone, causing her to foul out.

Tied at the end of overtime, 47-47, a second overtime would be needed to find a winner.

Notre Dame would again find an early lead in the opening minute of an overtime period, leading 51-48, with just under three minutes remaining.

The three point margin would remain as each team would hit a free throw. Then Oiler brought Glenwood within one point of Notre Dame 52-51, after a nice layup.

Notre Dame continued to add pressure to Glenwood though, taking a two point lead, 53-51 after another Schaefer free throw.

With time running out for the Lady Tigers, Glenwood was forced to foul. Unfortunately for Glenwood, Schaefer continued to hit free throws, six more to be exact, until time ran out in double overtime.

“I was very proud of my girls, and the way they played tonight,” Glenwood coach Kayla Wiley said. “They play with heart and intensity.”

Just watching the effort her girls put into the game was touching, according to Wiley.

“It was a great game to be a part of,” Wiley said. “Just to be able to be over there on the sideline, and see so much heart, you know, from both teams.”

McKenzie had similar comments on the overall play by his squad.

“It’s fun to watch them,” McKenzie said. “Sometimes I wish I didn’t coach, so I can just watch them play, because it’s less stressful. I just love them to death, and when they just step up in those situations, it just brings you closer together as a team.”

Notre Dame will travel to Franklin Furnace on Monday to play the Green Lady Bobcats. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.

Glenwood will hit the road as well on Monday, traveling to play the Western Lady Indians. That contest is scheduled for a 6 p.m. tip.
