FRANKLIN FURNANCE — The Minford Falcons defeated the Green Bobcats by a score of 72-48 Tuesday night. The final score did not tell the entire story, however, as Green came out early and got a lead on one of the best teams in Scioto County.

The Bobcats came out with a plan. They spaced the floor and double teamed Minford’s Brandon Rowe much of the night. He was held scoreless until five minutes left in the first half. Green’s shooting gave them a 16-15 lead at the end of the first.

Trey Kelley stepped up for the Falcons. He scored many of the Falcons early points and totaled 11 in the first half. Minford decided to put pressure on Green’s shooters in the second, forcing them to take mid and close range shots. Rowe came alive in the second, scoring 10 points in five minutes and igniting the Falcons, who then went on a 23-3 run. The half ended with a score of 46-25 with Minford firmly in the lead.

Jared Alley was also big for the Falcons, racking up rebounds and bruising his way in the paint to add 12 points of his own. Rowe finished with 16 for the Falcons, and Kelley led with 21 on the night. Minford would cruise on to a victory after their big second quarter.

“I thought Green played very well,” said Minford Head Coach Josh Shoemaker. “They came out and matched us shot for shot for awhile. I think they played tremendously. Coach Hollar’s kids are going to continue to get better.”

“Brandon Rowe was very patient tonight. He gave the ball up a lot and was very unselfish. It came down to the fact that we were more experienced tonight.”

Minford travels to McDermott Friday to take on the Northwest Mohawks. Tipoff is at 7:30.

Despite giving up a big second quarter, Green Head Coach Hollar was pleased with the team’s effort. Tayte Carver came off the bench to lead in scoring with 12. Andy Chavarria had 11, and Tanner Kimbler had 10.

“We had a great first quarter,” said Coach Hollar. “We came out with a lot of energy and we executed. That’s how I want us to play. We’ve been telling these kids they have to play together. Tonight they did. Yea, they scored 70 on us, but we put up 48 against one of the best teams in Southern Ohio. They are playing like a well-oiled machine. We did what we needed to do, but we ran out of gas before halftime.”

“We held Rowe in check for awhile, but he’s a stud. He will beat you no matter what. He started scoring in the second, and Trey Kelley was scoring and they were just hitting shots when we really didn’t want them to hit shots,” joked Coach Hollar. “They are a physical team. They have size on us and we were just trying to play as hard as possible. Now we have to go get ready for another big, physical team in Notre Dame. When we play as a team we are hard to beat. When we don’t, we get blown out. It’s all about playing together.”

Green travels to Portsmouth to take on the Notre Dame Titans Friday. Tipoff is at 7:30.
