Three Clay students from Cadette Girl Scout troop 1190 have recently earned their Silver Awards after many hours of work in their community. The scouts include Madison Nigh, Jensen Warnock, and Jaelyn Warnock.
According to Julie Warnock, the troop’s leader, the Silver Award is the second highest award in Girl Scouts. Warnock said that the girls are now looking into getting their Gold Award, which is comparable to the Boy Scouts of America’s Eagle Scout.
To earn a Silver Award, the young ladies had to complete a 50-hour service project that was designed to make their community a better place. The Panthers worked with Sierra’s Haven for New and Used Pets to complete this.
Not only did they volunteer time at the shelter, but they collected supplies, and made toys and blankets for the animals. Another important component of their project was educating the community about pet overpopulation and the importance of spaying and neutering pets.
“We are proud of the young people in this area for their dedicated spirit of volunteerism. We are always in dire need of volunteers and we appreciate extra help whenever we can get it,” Linda Cottle, of Sierra’s Haven, said. “Sometimes, young people get a bad reputation for not volunteering, or not being involved, but we see plenty walk through our doors with large hearts and helping hands. The Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts have been wonderful throughout the years, to volunteer and have fundraisers for us. We are forever grateful.”
Warnock said she is also proud of her scouts.
“They realized the important work Sierras does for our community and encouraged everyone to volunteer, either financially or with their time,” Warnock explained. “I’m really proud of them, because 50 hours is a lot of work. I’ve had many girls in the troop, but these three have followed through all the way.”
Warnock said she has worked with the three scouts since they were in kindergarten.
“It makes me very proud, that they’ve grown into such wonderful young ladies who are hard working and dedicated,” Warnock said. “I am mother to two of them, so I am also a proud mom. It has been so rewarding, to see the kids get so much out of it.”
