The poet Robert Frost, when asked why he had his honorary caps and gowns made into a quilt, responded – “It’s knowing what to do with things that counts.” It was obvious on Friday the Sociology Club at Shawnee State University knew what to do with the inventory at the former Bearly Used Treasures store in Sciotoville.
“(Owner) Debbie (Horner) is closing this shop, so we’re packing up everything here today to take it down to The Counseling Center and we’re donating it to Stepping Stones for the women and children, at the the Marsh House,” Lisa Silhavy of the SSU Sociology Club said. “We’re also to the (Scioto County) Domestic Violence Shelter. We think this was a great opportunity for us, as members of Shawnee State, to get out and be able to help out in the community and show that the students at Shawnee State are there for the community. We want to help out anybody that we can. Especially being part of the Sociology Club. That’s our role. That’s our future role as future social workers and sociologists.”
Several members of the club spent a large part of the day taking each item off the racks, folding them, bagging them up, and loading them up to be transferred to their new owners.
“I’m doing an internship at the Domestic Violence Shelter and that’s why we’re taking a portion of the things there,” Emily Basham of the SSUSC said. “They’ve got a great need for children’s clothes.”
Basham said the Domestic Violence Shelter brings in clients and help them obtain Protection Orders among other services.
“There’s a variety of situations that come through the door, and some people just need a Protection Order. Some people somewhere safe to stay,” Basham said. “So we have a secure facility for people to come and we help them in whatever way they need. There’s food for them and clothes.”
Horner said the store has been having sales for the last month, and she decided it was time to dispense with all of the merchandise so she can spend time at home with her children.
“This is going to a good cause,” Horner said.
Horner said she could not have cleared out the inventory without the help of the Sociology Club members.
“I would be in here another three or four months,” Horner said. “This is great. I was tickled to death when she (Silhavy) came to me and said, ‘would you be willing to…’ and I said, ‘oh, yeah.’”
