Biehl named runner of week

Sports Release

COLUMBIA, Ky. – For the third time in her career, Shawnee State women’s cross country runner Sarah Biehl has won the Mid-South Conference’s Runner of the Week Award. The senior runner from Lowell, Ohio was awarded with the honor on Tuesday afternoon after a time of 18:34 allowed the Sports Management major to nail down a splendid fourth-place run at the Flyer 5K Invitational in Kettering, Ohio on Saturday morning.

With the aforementioned time of 18:34 in the 74-person field, Biehl nailed down a time that was one minute and nine seconds faster than her closest teammate, Anna Havranek and put down a run that was faster than 57 of the 60 Division I runners that were competing in the event, finishing just 33 seconds off of the winning runner.

In each time that Biehl has won the MSC Runner of the Week Award, the senior has set a time under the 18:35 mark. On October 9, 2013, a time of 18:24 at the NAIA Great Lakes Challenge – which was good enough for 10th overall in the event out of 363 runners – gave Biehl the award for the first time as a sophomore and allowed her to qualify for the NAIA Championships for the first time, where she placed 37th in the 319-person field.

Then on September 19 of last year, Biehl set her personal best mark with a time of 18:17 as the harrier finished just 16 seconds off of the winning runner in a field stacked with Division I talent at the Towson Invitational in Towson, Md. That time currently sits fourth on the all-time list at Shawnee State and is just 24 seconds away from the all-time mark that Lisa Davies-Culbertson set at the Ohio University Invitational on September 27, 2008.

After an off weekend, the Bears will be off and running again as the women and men will be at the Brother Doyle Meet of Champions in New Rochelle, New York on the campus of Iona University on Saturday, September 19.
