Second Presbyterian Church Women’s Association invites the community to an old-fashioned ice cream social on the church’s lawn from 4-6 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 13. Proceeds from the Ice Cream Social are allocated toward the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols event held at the church each year.

Dr. Stan Workman, director of music, and organist at SPC, said the social event enables them to carry out their mission of music at SPC.

“Music is an important part of the mission of Second Presbyterian Church. The Ice Cream Social is a benefit for our Annual Festival of Nine Lessons, which is held on a week night, and open to all of our community. The Ice Cream Social is a fun way that the community and church can additionally support this event,” Workman said. “It’s held on the front steps of our church with food and fun activities like a Chinese Auction, Cake Walk, and Dessert Auction. It has proven to be a great time of fun and fellowship.”

A $5 ticket per individual will buy a hot dog with sauce and all the trimmings, potato chips, ice cream, cake and lemonade or water. The event will feature cake walks, a variety of activities for children and a Chinese auction.

The special attraction will be an auction of unique baked goods based on church members’ favorite recipes. Items to be auctioned include a Greenbriar pound cake, fresh apple cake, carrot cake with cream cheese frosting, orange marmalade cake, dark chocolate tart, gluten-free brownies, fudge, coconut cream balls, Heath Bar cake, a variety of pies, homemade pimento cheese, fresh garden vegetables and other favorite recipes.

Proceeds from the ice cream social will be used to help defray expenses of SPC’s annual Festival of Lessons & Carols held each December as a special community event.

Tickets and information may be obtained by stopping in the church office on Waller Street during regular office hours, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, or contacting the office at 353-4159. Walk-ins are welcome. In case of rain, the ice cream social will be held in the church’s lower level dining room.
