The Northwest soccer team got the best of Clay on Tuesday evening, as the Mohawks took a 3-1 victory at Clay High School.

The Mohawks got on the board midway through the first half, when the Panthers were called for a penalty near their own goal. Northwest’s Caleb Mills stepped up and buried a penalty kick to give his team a 1-0 lead.

Ten minutes later, the Mohawks doubled their lead when Skylar Shaffer added goal. Northwest took a 2-0 lead into halftime.

The Mohawks grew their lead to 3-0 midway through the second when Fabian Dehart found Tyler Webb for Northwest’s third goal of the game. A minute later, Clay’s Jordan Collier responded, breaking the shutout with Clay’s only goal of the evening. He was assisted by Tyler Knittel on the play.

“Northwest had a great defensive effort against us tonight,” Clay coach Mark Trapp said. “We will continue to improve our program, work hard and the results will come.”

Despite picking up the loss, Clay keeper Anthony Williams recorded nine saves on the evening.

Clay takes the field again on Thursday, when they host South Webster in an SOC I match. Northwest is also in action on Thursday, when they host Minford in an SOC II contest.
