With the exception of the last four years when he was out of office, Democrat faithful and many other area residents have gathered to celebrate Ted Strickland’s birthday and that event will be renewed this year on Sept. 12 from 1-4 p.m. at the Scioto County Fairgrounds in Lucasville, staged by the Scioto County Ted Strickland for Senate Committee.

“The one thing that is probably a little different this year than in the past is that Pike and Lawrence counties are also helping with the birthday party,” Judy Newman of the Scioto County Ted Strickland for Senate Committee said. “We’ll have invitations to probably 8 to 10 counties, but it’s the three counties that are really working together to get everybody notified.”

Newman said entertainment will be provided by award-winning artist Steve Free and Shirley Crothers Marley and Friends. She said Butch Buckle will cater the event and the food is included in the ticket.

Newman said the suggested contribution for the party is $15 for adults with children under the age of 12 admitted free. Tickets are available at the door.

Over the years dignitaries such as Texas Governor Ann Richards and Patrick Kennedy, son of Edward “Ted” Kennedy, have attended the event.

“This year it’s all about Ted and his running for Senate,” Newman said.

Strickland is a native of Scioto County, born in McDermott. He was a member of the first graduation class at Northwest High School. It was earlier in the year Strickland announced his intention to challenge incumbent U.S. Senator Rob Portman in the upcoming election campaign.

Strickland served six terms in Congress and became Ohio’s 68th governor in 2006, losing his bid for reelection to current governor John Kasich. In 2013, President Obama nominated Strickland to be a public delegate to the 68th U.N. General Assembly. He also served as a senior advisor to the U.S. Mission to the United Nations in New York.

Newman said anyone wanting more information about the Ted Strickland Birthday Party can call her at 740-821-0294.

Strickland could not be reached for comment.
