There are few more suspensful moments in life than those moments just before announcing the winner of Fair Queen competition at the Scioto County Fair. It is that deep breath that occurs between “And this year’s Scioto County Fair Queeen is…” and the name that follows.
“They don’t know until we open the envelope on stage,” Mary Evans of the Fair Queen Committee said. “The judging is done in June and it’s in a sealed envelope at the 4-H office until the night.”
On Monday night, Kathleen Kuhn, daughter of Dale and Regina Kuhn of Minford, heard her name called out. It is only then that the winner takes the opportunity to exhale.
“She was very excited,” Evans said. “All the girls were excited.”
The crown was handed over to Kuhn by the 2014 queen, Holly Collett. Kuhn was escorted for the event by Braden Lindamood. Joining her on stage was first runner-up Audri Graf, daughter of Greg and Cheri Graf of West Portsmouth, escorted by Jeremy Fuhrmann.
In addition the Royalty, court members included Charlie McClay, daughter of Sarah and David McClay of McDermott, escorted by Jason Montavan; Rachael Slone, daughter of Rodney and Mary Slone of South Webster, escorted by Luke Pertuset, and Chelsea Rice, daughter of John and Phyllis Rice of Portsmouth, escorted by Roger Mcnutt
“The rest of the fair they work all of the shows,” Evans said. “They work really hard. Then, after the fair, they attend River Days and all the local parades until next year. All the girls also work the pre-fair judging before the fair. It’s an honor but it’s a hard job also.”
Evans said this year’s winners were all 4-H members, though that is not necessarily the case every year.
“They can be Girl Scouts or 4-H, but this year they were all 4-H,” Evans said.
