CINCINNATI (AP) — The Cincinnati Reds brought back Buck Farmer on Thursday, signing the reliever to a $2.25 million, one-year contract.

Farmer became a free agent after he went 4-5 with three saves and a 4.20 ERA in 71 appearances for Cincinnati this year.

The right-hander had a 2-2 record with two saves and a 3.83 ERA in 44 games in 2022, his first season with the Reds.

He can earn $350,000 in performance bonuses for games pitched: $50,000 each for 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60 and 65.

He had a $1.75 million, one-year contract for this season.

Cincinnati also designated outfielder Bubba Thompson for assignment.

The 25-year-old Thompson is a .242 hitter with a homer and 13 RBIs in 92 big league games — all with Texas.

Farmer, a Georgia native who turns 33 in February, was selected by Detroit in the fifth round of the 2013 amateur draft.

He made his major league debut with the Tigers in 2014.

He is 21-28 with a 4.98 ERA in 356 career games, including 21 starts.

Montas signs with Reds

Frankie Montas and the Cincinnati Reds have agreed to a $16 million, one-year contract — a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press, a deal that gives the 30-year-old right-hander a chance to revive his career after an injury-decimated spell with the New York Yankees.

The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity on Saturday, because the agreement was subject to a successful physical.

The agreement was first reported by The New York Post.

Montas was acquired by the Yankees from Oakland with reliever Lou Trivino on Aug. 1, 2022 for four prospects.

Montas went 1-3 with a 6.35 ERA in eight starts with New York that year, later admitting he wasn’t healthy.

He had labrum surgery on Feb. 21 with Los Angeles Dodgers head team physician Dr. Neal ElAttrache, and made his only big league appearance of the year on Sept. 30.

On the next-to-last day of the season, Montas retired four hitters — while allowing two hits and a walk to get the win in a 5-2 victory at Kansas City.

Montas is 37-35 with a 3.90 ERA in 99 starts and 31 relief appearances for the Chicago White Sox (2015), Oakland (2017-2022) and the Yankees.

He had a $7.5 million salary last season in his last year of arbitration eligibility.
