SOUTH SHORE, Ky. — The Legion Days Carnival in South Shore is back. It has been more than 50 years since the last event of its kind has taken place. The James L. Flannery American Legion Post 276 wanted to bring the back to the community.
The Legion Days Carnival is fully-loaded with all of the grandeur that carnivals provide, from refreshments such as cotton candy and fried Oreos, to lively amusement rides by Casey’s Rides, Inc., along with music and a host of vendor booths.
John “Red” McKenzie, board member of American Legion Post 276, said he is delighted to see the happiness and laughter of the children at the carnival.
“This is just great. This town has needed something like this for a long time. The rain stopped long enough for the parade, for the fireworks, and now this,” McKenzie said. “It is just good to look around and see these kids all laughing.”
The Legion Day Carnival also serves as an economical source of entertainment for underprivileged children, according John McKenzie’s wife, Faye McKenzie.
“A lot of these kids can’t afford to go to the beach, and so this carnival is something nice for them to come and enjoy,” Faye McKenzie said.
Brooke Haywood, president of the Women’s Auxiliary of the American Legion Post 276, said they are extremely excited about hosting the event.
“We are very excited. All of the children seem like they are tickled to death with everything and there’s a good turn out for this to be the first day,” Haywood said. “I feel like God has really blessed us with the weather. We hope to make this an annual event, and hopefully next year we can have the hours extended.”
Todd Hunt, board member of Post 276, said they wanted to bring a positive experience to South Shore.
“We are trying do something nice for our town, and just do something positive for everyone and for our veterans,” Hunt said. “We are just trying to grow as a town, and be supportive as a town.”
Haywood said Post 276 has an incredible board that is truly concerned about the community.
“We have awesome veterans here at Post 276 now, and our board has been wanting to do this for about three years, and so finally we got it,” Haywood said. “The American Legion is about veterans and the community, and children and the board members that we have here are honestly about that. They are genuine. They really want to do things to make the community better.”
Haywood said Post 276 is not concerned with the amount of money raised from the carnival, and that they would be content with just breaking even.
The Legion Days Carnival will continue Friday, July 8 from 6-10 p.m. and 4-10 p.m. on Saturday, July 9.
