Waverly Post 142 Shockers lose tight game to Chillicothe Post 62, 3-2

CHILLICOTHE — Waverly Post 142 lost its first Region V game Wednesday evening to Chillicothe Post 62 by a final score of 3-2.

Hayden Baker got the start for the Post 142 Shockers Wednesday evening. He pitched four complete innings in the loss and was the pitcher of record for Waverly Post 142. He allowed three runs, one earned, off four hits. Baker issued five walks in the game as well, but was also able to strike out three batters.

“Hayden improved from his previous start,” Waverly Post 142 coach Jonathan Teeters said while talking about his pitcher’s performance against Chillicothe Post 62.

With the loss, Baker’s record falls to 1-1 on the season.

“We’re still giving away too many free bases,” Teeters said. “We didn’t make a few routine plays we should’ve made and it cost us. That’s what happens in legion baseball when you don’t do the little things right.”

The tough loss snaps the two-game winning streak for the Shockers, who still maintain a winning record on the season.

Wednesday’s game started off well for Waverly Post 142.

In the top of the first inning, the Shockers took a quick 1-0 lead over Chillicothe Post 62. Logan Kottenbrook started the game with a full count single, and then stole second base.

Derek Burk sacrificed Kottenbrook to third base with a bunt, which allowed Eli Daniels to drive in Kottenbrook with a grounder to the first baseman.

With a 1-0 lead going into the bottom of the third inning, Post 142 looked to be in charge of the game. However, the bottom of the third inning proved to be a momentum-changing inning in the game.

Chillicothe Post 62 had a big inning that started with a pair of walks and then a fielding error. Despite the start of the inning, the Shockers were able to get two force outs at third base preventing scores. However, Post 62 still managed to score two runs in the inning thanks to some passed-balls and another fielding error.

Post 62 continued to roll on into the fourth inning, scoring another run to take a 3-1 lead over Waverly Post 142.

The Shockers struggled in the fifth inning as they went down in order and again in the sixth, as they stranded a runner in the inning.

Still trailing 3-1, Post 142 came out in the seventh inning with a mission and nearly came back to tie the game. After scoring one run in the inning and cutting Post 62’s lead to just one run, 3-2, the Shockers had runners on second and third with two outs.

Unfortunately for the Shockers, they were unable to get another run in the inning, as the last out went right to the second baseman who then threw the ball to first to get the final out of the game and finish off Waverly Post 142 3-2.

A trio of Shockers finished the night with two hits each, Kottenbrook, Burk and Jared Alley.

Kottenbrook went 2-for-4 at the plate scoring a run in the first, while Burk also went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

Daniels was 0-for-3 in the game, but did pick up an RBI.

With the loss, Post 142 falls to 4-3 overall on the season, with a 3-1 Region V record.

The Shockers will be a part of the Hillsboro Wodden Bat Tournament over the weekend.
