Waverly Post 142 Shockers win again

CHILLICOTHE — Make it two in a row for Waverly Post 142, as the Shockers got another win Tuesday evening after defeating Chillicothe Post 757, 4-3.

The win came in comeback fashion as well, making the win a little sweeter for Waverly Post 142 coach Jonathan Teeters.

“We didn’t lay down and I’ll give credit to our guys for fighting there in the seventh,” Teeters said. “We still have to do a better job of doing the little things right.”

After a scoreless first inning from both teams, Post 142 was able to strike first by scoring two runs in the top of the second inning.

Shawn Mersiel got the inning going with a two-out single which was then followed up by another single by Logan Kottenbrook. Both Mersiel and Kottenbrook would score for the Shockers before the final out of the inning was recorded.

Leading 2-0 in the bottom of the second inning, Post 142 avoided another scoring scare by Post 757. In the first inning the Chillicothe Post was able to get a runner on third but was stranded. However, in the second inning, Post 757 threatened again and with the potential to cause more damage than they would have in the first inning.

The start of the inning couldn’t have gone any better for Post 142. The Shockers recorded two quick outs, both fly balls. With two outs to start the inning, it looked like the Shockers would make quick work of Post 757 in the second.

However, the next three batters all reached with two-out singles, loading the bases, as the sixth batter of the inning, the team’s lead-off hitter, came to the plate. After giving up three consecutive singles, Waverly Post 142 was able to get out of the inning unscathed thanks to another fly-ball out.

The Shockers held off another threat in the bottom of the third inning, as Chillicothe Post 757 had two runners in scoring position, one on third and another on second. After fending off another scoring threat, Waverly Post 142 continued to lead 2-0 after three innings.

The score would remain the same until the fifth inning. Chillicothe Post 757 scored one run in the inning, breaking the stranglehold Waverly Post 142 had on preventing them from crossing home plate.

After cutting the Shockers lead in half by scoring one in the fifth inning, Chillicothe Post 757 continued their momentum in the sixth inning by scoring two runs in the inning and taking a 3-2 lead over the Post 142 Shockers.

After six innings, Post 142 found itself trailing for the first time in the game and only three outs away from a defeat.

Jared Alley started off the seventh inning for the Shockers by drawing a walk. He was then advanced to second base after Drew Harris hit into a fielder’s choice.

Zach Delotell came up with a huge clutch hit with a runner in scoring position for the Shockers. Delotell hit a double, which drove in Alley from second, tying the game, 3-3.

The magic wouldn’t end there for Waverly Post 142 though, as Garrett Moore reached on a single and then stole second base, giving the Shockers two runners in scoring position, as Delotell was standing on third with Moore at second.

Hayden Baker then gave Waverly Post 142 the lead with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Delotell from third.

“Jared (Alley) worked a walk and Drew (Harris) laid down a nice bunt to move him over,” Teeters said. “Zach stepped up for us to knock in the tying run.”

Thanks to a two-run inning, the Shockers regained the lead after the top of the seventh inning, 4-3.

Alex Powell came out in the bottom of the seventh inning to finish what he started. After issuing a lead-off walk, Powell and the Shockers were able to record three-straight outs to finish the game and get their second consecutive win.

Powell pitched the complete game for Waverly Post 142, surrendering three runs, two earned, off 10 hits. He walked a pair of hitters and struck out three in the win.

“Alex tossed another good game for us,” Teeters said. “He started to get get up in the zone a little in the sixth, but he worked through it for the complete game.”

Kottenbrook led the Shockers with three hits on the night, going 3-for-4 at the plate. Delotell and Baker each drove in a run as well to highlight the win for Post 142.

With the win, the Shockers improve to 4-2 on the season as well as picking up another Region V win, remaining undefeated in the conference at 3-0.
