WAVERLY — The Waverly Post 142 Shockers bounced back from a tough loss to gain a 14-9 victory over Jackson Post 81 Monday evening.

“As a team we were focused at the plate and played some small ball to manufacture some runs,” Post 142 coach Jonathan Teeters said. “Our guys in the middle really did a nice job knocking guys in. Eli and Jared both were tough outs today.”

Once again, early offensive success helped the Shockers gain momentum in the game and carry it through all the way to the end to earn their third victory of the season.

After allowing one hitter to reach in the first inning, Waverly Post 142 got rolling in the bottom of the inning. Derek Burk drew a walk to start the inning off for the Shockers and was then advanced by Shawn Mersiel via sacrifice.

Eli Daniels then came to the plate as the designated hitter, blasting a two-run home run to give the Shockers a quick 2-0 lead over Jackson Post 81.

Post 81 fired back almost immediately in the top of the second, as they put together a three-run inning. The visiting Jackson Post 81 scored thanks to three hits in the inning, along with drawing a walk and reaching safely on a fielding error.

Waverly Post 142 regained their lead in the bottom of the second inning. Zach Delotell and Eric Cook started the inning off for the Shockers with back-to-back singles.

The Shockers then played a little small-ball, as Hayden Baker laid down a sacrifice to advance both runners. Garrett Moore then drove in the first run of the inning, by way of a grounder hit to the shortstop.

Burk then drew a two-out walk to continue the inning, which paid dividends for the Shockers as Mersiel hit a single to score the second run of the inning, giving Waverly Post 142 a 4-3 lead at the end of the third inning.

Post 81 tied the game in the top of the third inning, as they scored one run to bring the game to an even 4-4 tie.

Post 142 had a breakout inning in their half of the inning, the bottom of the third. The Shockers scored seven runs in the inning as Cook, Baker, Moore, Burk, Mersiel, Jared Alley and Drew Harris each touched home in the biggest inning of the night for either team.

After three innings of play, Waverly Post 142 led Jackson Post 81 11-4.

Post 81 did not give up though, as they managed to cut their seven-run deficit to a five-run deficit by scoring two runs in the top of the fourth, bringing the score to a more manageable 11-6.

Waverly Post 142 added another run in the bottom of the fourth, negating one of the runs scored by Jackson Post 81 earlier in the inning. After four complete, the Shockers led by six runs, 12-6.

In the fifth inning Jackson Post 81 continued to fight, scoring one more run, but then gave up a run to the Shockers in the bottom half of the inning.

The sixth inning saw Post 81 bring in another two runs, as they battled to stay alive in the game. However, the Shockers once again were able to score in their half of the inning, to gain a 14-9 lead over Post 81.

After a one-two-three inning in the top of the seventh, Waverly Post 142 secured their lead and victory over Jackson Post 81, by a final score of 14-9.

Gavin Yazell got his first win on the mound for the season with the Shockers victory over Post 81. He went through five innings of work allowing nine runs, eight of which were earned, off six hits. Yazell walked four batters and struck out three in the win.

“Gavin had a nice bounce back outing after starting kind of rusty at Pickerington last week,” Teeters said. “We didn’t back him like we should have defensively, but we were able to support him with enough runs.”

Delotell came in to relieve Yazell. He pitched two innings and only allowed one hit and also struck out a batter.

Burk, Daniels and Alley all had two RBIs each in the high-scoring endeavor for the Shockers.

Burk finished the night 0-for-1 from the plate with his pair of runs batted in, while Daniels got his two RBIs thanks to a two-run home run early in the game.

Alley led Waverly Post 142 with three hits on the night, going 3-for-4 as he knocked in a pair of runs.

Delotell had a good night hitting for the Shockers. He drove in a run, while hitting 2-for-4 at the plate.

Baker drove in a run as well for Post 142, while fellow teammate Moore’s night was highlighted by a double.

Waverly Post 142 improves to 3-2 on the season with the win over Jackson Post 81. They are still undefeated in Region V play, with a 2-0 record.
