Ervin Vance wins second Cletus Classic at Portsmouth Raceway Park


Portsmouth Raceway Park was the temporary home for over 100 race teams Saturday evening, as PRP held the Cletus Classic.

Ervin Vance of Beaver, Kentucky took the checkered flag in the annual race for Modifieds, a repeat performance from last year’s race. As a result, Vance has won the Cletus Classic for two straight years, having won the innaugural race last year and then again winning this year’s edition.

The Modifieds weren’t alone at PRP. In the Late Model Feature, R.J. Conley of Wheelersburg, Ohio got the checkered flag, while Brian Sammons, Jr. won it all in the Sport Mods feature.

The Bombers Feature saw Stout, OH native Shane Pendleton get the win.

Limited Lates had a pair of features which were claimed by Catlettsburg, KY’s Cameron Logan and Mike Meyers of Fayetteville.

Vance picked up his win by holding off Shon Flannary, who would end up finishing second in the Modified Feature. Jeremy Rayburn, Kevin Hall and Sahwn Holliday finished out the top five finishers in the race.

Adam Colley finished sixth Saturday, advancing 11 positions from start to finish. He earned the Hard Charger Award as a result of his performance in the race.

Rounding up the rest of the top ten in the Cletus Classic was Cody Smith, Scott LeMaster, Tony DeHart and Jason Hall.

Conley picked up his first win of the season at PRP Saturday night, leading the entire race from first green to checkered. Everyone else was left to fight for second place, after Conley gained a convincing lead over the rest of the pack.

Stephen Breeding took second in the Late Model Feature, followed by Kenny Christy in third and Delmas Conley and Shannon Thornsberry in fourth and fifth place.

Nick Bocook, Kenny Howell, Robbie Lewis, Josh Bocook and Avery Taylor finished out the top ten in the race.

Sammons picked up his first win at PRP with a lot of excitement. Sammons dominated the Sport Mod Feature, but had an incident in turn four on the final lap of the race.

Sammons and a lapped car hit hard in the turn, however, Sammons was able to recover and straighten out his car to come out of the run and race to the finish, getting the win.

Emily Jordan took second place, followed soon after by Eric Dennison in third. Jimmy “Showtime” Spillman finished fourth, while Keith Shanks was fifth. The rest of the top ten included Danny Hamilton, Jr. in sixth, followed by George Caldwell, Eric Wade, Evyian Terry and Jeremy Brady.

A battle of father versus son highlighted the Bomber Feature, which saw Zack Pendleton keep his father Shane at bay to get a feature win. Zack picked up his first win of the season Saturday when he was able to hold of his father, along with Rick Butler, who finished third and Wayne Hughes and Matthew McClain who took fourth and fifth place.

The top ten was finalized by Joey Clark finishing sixth, Mike Drake in seventh, David Skaggs in eighth and David Whitt and Bo McCarty.

The Limited Late Models had a pair of A-Main Features Saturday night. The first was a make-up from a postponed Memorial Day Weekend Race.

Logan took the checkered victory in the first feature which was a part of the postponed racing card. Logan had a big night, as he won his first-ever feature at PRP. To get the win, Logan had to block off the advancement of current reigning track champion Mike Meyers.

Rounding out the rest of the top ten finishers in the first Limited Late feature were Ronnie Whitt, Evyian Terry, Jacob Curnutte, Joe Whitt, Chris Lockhart, Duane Pick, Randy Ross and finally, John Melvin.

Meyers refused anything but first place in the second Limited Late Model Feature Saturday, which was the orianally scheduled feature for the night. Meyers picked up the win and was followed by Evyian Terry, Cameron Logan, Kevin Terry, Vincent Bender, Randy Ross, Chris Lockhart, John Melvin, Ronnie Whit and Nathan Martin.

Portsmouth Raceway Park will return to action Saturday, June 18, 2016 with a full card of races. Gates will open at 4:00 p.m. with racing scheduled to being about 7:30 p.m. Additional information on Saturday’s races can be found by visiting
