Cycling enthusiasts supported

Cycling enthusiasts gathered at Moontime Lake in Lucasville, June 11, to begin the trek across miles of cycling trails spanning through the area for a ‘Tour of the Little Smokies.’

The Tour began at scenic Moontime Lake, located at 2198 Sedan Crabtree Road in Lucasville. From there, riders chose a variety of tours based on distance from 16 miles up to 100 miles.

Sponsored by the Portsmouth Rotary Club, the Tour of the Little Smokies (TOTLS) event, (formally known as the Scenic Scioto Heritage Trail), was designed to showcase the regions beauty.

The Scenic Scioto Heritage Trail was established in 2007. Those who travel it experience over 84-miles of adventure through the rugged, heavily wooded Appalachian hill country and through an area rich in history, full of river lore and native American influences.

With its 41 points of interest, the Scenic Scioto Heritage Trail enables the traveler the opportunity to capture the full flavor of the region and experience the varied topography and natural beauty of the area.

“Portsmouth Rotary created this event so that people from around our region can appreciate and participate in cycling,” said TOTLS Committee Chair Reece Brown. “Over the past few years, events like the Tour of the Scioto River Valley (TOSRV) have been declining. We’re willing to step up to the plate and accommodate cyclists here.”

The tour is held on a bi-annual basis and is designed to offer cyclists the opportunity to view Scioto County at two of it’s peak seasons for outdoor appreciation.

“This route is so amazing and so well-marked, and it’s designed to accommodate cyclist of all experience levels. 100 miles is the top option, there’s 55 miles, 39 miles and 16 miles. It’s a 100 percent paved tour as well,” explained Brown.

Don’t worry if you missed out on the June ride, cyclists will be given the opportunity to participate again in September. The next tour will be held on September 24, riders can begin anytime between 8 and 10 a.m. Cyclists can register for the September tour at
