Jackson makes state run

MASON, Ohio- Drew Jackson of Wheelersburg had a monumental year on the tennis court. He tore through the SOC and made it to the OHSAA Boys State Tennis Tournament.

He would go on to lose (6-2, 6-0) to the fourth ranked player in the state, Noah Connaughton, but that puts just a minor blemish on his record this season. Jackson went undefeated in the SOC, going 17-0 in singles play.

“Drew is a pleasure to work with,” said Coach Tom Carter. “If you see something out there that’s not working, you tell him and he will immediately work to fix it. That makes him easy to coach. He works all winter and summer long.”

He finished second at both the sectional and district tournament to Jason Prince of Fairland.

“He finished the season 27-3. We sat down and talked after he lost in the state tournament and told him a few things he needs to work on. He’s already started: he’s traveling right now down to Hilton Head playing tennis,” laughed Carter.

Jackson was the only freshman in the state tournament and the first local player to advance that far since 2007.

“He’s only going to get better,” said Carter. “I really don’t foresee him losing a single SOC game. I think he will protect his reign as SOC champion and player of the year. He goes out there every day thinking he can win. He knows his strengths and he knows what he has to work on. With an attitude like that, I can see him doing some truly special things.”

“In the 36 years I’ve been coaching tennis and this includes my son,” laughed Carter. “I’ve never been so excited. Drew is without question very talented, and he’s strictly business.”

Look for Drew Jackson and the Wheelersburg Pirates to take to the courts with rackets in hand next year, as they look to continue to dominate SOC tennis.
