Teams compete in golf scramble

A field of thirty teams competed Saturday afternoon in the seventh annual SkillsUSA Golf Scramble, held at the Elks Country Club. In frigid playing conditions, the team of Toddy McDaniel, Nathan Kerns, Nick Lewis and Heath Friend won the tournament with a score of 20-under par.

“We had an absolute blast,” McDaniel said. “It was a great tournament.”

The tournament has grown over the years and offers door prizes to all golfers and hole sponsorships from businesses throughout Scioto County. The proceeds go to students at the Scioto County Career Technical Center who compete in SkillsUSA events.

McDaniel and his team won $500 with their first-place finish. The group, sponsored by OSCO Industries consisting of Dennis Pistole, Don Poillard, Greg Weddington and Ryan Hines earned $200 for second with a score of 18-under par. The OSCO team also earned an additional $320 with the only Skin in the competition.

Pistole also earned a golf club prize from Tom’s Golf Shop and the Elks Country Club with the longest drive of the day on the 18th hole. Chad Wilson made the longest putt on Hole 9 to earn another skill prize. And, Andy Ramey nearly earned the Berndt-Murfin Insurance Company sponsored $10,000 Hole-in-One prize. His shot on the 125-yard par three, fourth hole earned him Closest to the Pin honors.

Sponsored teams in the event included OSCO, Woody’s Bar, Community Action Organization, Buckler Welding, State Electric Supply, Scioto County CTC, Fraternal Order of Police No. 33, Star Inc. and Masterworks Jewelry.

Tournament director and SkillsUSA Advisor Jay Miller recognized those who volunteered to make the event such a success.

“It takes a lot of people to put together a scramble of this magnitude,” Miller said. “We hope that each player enjoyed their experience and plan to return next year.”

Volunteers, who registered teams, managed the course and fed the players afterward with food supplied by The Scioto Ribber, included Lynda Spittle, Stewart Spittle, Ralph Madden, Tyler Story, Annie Storey, Jackie Hickman, Vicki Richard, Ryan Keaton, Kim Keaton, Denise Coldiron and Sharilyn Miller.

The eighth annual SkillsUSA Golf Scramble is scheduled for Saturday, May 20th, 2017. Those interested in supporting Scioto County CTC students and SkillsUSA may E-mail [email protected] or call 740-259-6821.
