Greyhounds knock out East

SCIOTOVILLE — After trailing 2-0 through the first couple innings, the Manchester Lady Greyhounds roared back with a big five run inning in the third. East attempted to rally late though, with pitcher Shay Brown slugging an in the park home run that brought them closer. In the end, East would succumb by a score of 10-5.

The Lady Tartans struggled at the plate on the evening. Only four of eleven base runners were the results of hits, with Greyhounds Pitcher Johnson recording ten strike outs.

“We were really kept off balance all night,” East softball coach, Jessica Conley said. “She pitched really well for them. Coming into next year we really need to work on protecting the plate with two strikes. When you are down in the count you have to expand your strike zone, you have to work and you have to make the pitcher work to get you out.”

There were a total of fifteen walks in the ball game. Both pitchers had trouble locating their pitches at times, which put a strain on the players in the field. Manchester had three errors while the Tartans committed five.

But, East improved last years 2-20 record, going 6-12 this year. They lose two seniors, including first baseman Syndney Dingess. The rest of the team will return, and Conley promises they will continue to improve next season.

“There were a lot of miscues out there,” Conley said. “One of the things I want to work on is confidence. We can’t let one error or bad play get us down, it’s like a snowball effect if that happens. Confidence and fundamentals are important.

“Honestly, I’m just proud of all these girls. They played hard all year, and unfortunately we were down three starters tonight because of various reasons. Despite that, they came out and played hard and gave their all.”

Shay Brown went 2-3 with a home run, two RBIs, a stolen base and a walk in the game, while Peyton Helphinstine went 2-3 with a stolen base and a walk. Both players pitched for the Tartans in the game and will return next season to lead an older, more experienced East squad.
