1,500 expected to participate in SOMC Hike For Hospice Saturday

Approximately 1,500 people are expected to take part in what has become one of the area’s favorite community events – the 30th annual Hike for Hospice, this Saturday, May 14, at SOMC Hospice, 2201 25th St. in Portsmouth.

“Last year we had over 1,200,” Scott Hilbert, coordinator of hospice relations, said. “This year, assuming the weather holds off, we are expecting over 1,500.”

Hilbert said some 250 volunteers are utilized for the walk.

“Registration begins at 8:30 (a.m.) and the hike begins at 9:30 (a.m.),” Hilbert said. “It’s a 5K family walk. We do have some people that choose to run but it is not promoted as a race.”

Hilbert said there is no admission cost and all of the proceeds from the walk go to benefit SOMC Hospice and their CARTIS fund. Participants of the hike raise funds by asking friends to sponsor an amount per kilometer walked or by giving an outright donation. Participants also can join in groups of three or more, presenting banners, shirts or other forms of team-promotion.

“That helps support our patients and families that are in Hospice,” Hilbert said.

All hikers and supporters will be eligible for various prizes, which will be presented at the end of the hike. For more information, please call 740-356- 2567.

“Hike for Hospice is a significant fundraiser for SOMC Hospice each year. The Hike provides an opportunity for community members to gather together, honor their loved ones and support an amazing organization,” Hilbert said. “We are looking forward to this year’s hike. It always generates a large crowd for a great cause.”
