Raid on Bertha Avenue in Portsmouth nabs heroin and two Dayton men

The drug of choice in Scioto County continues to be heroin, so those who look to make a buck off addiction continue to bring it to town. Now, two Dayton men are in the Scioto County Jail as the result of a drug raid by members of the Southern Ohio Drug Task Force.

David Davon Dewberry, 33, of Rockwood Avenue, Dayton, Ohio and Dajuan Spann, 28, of Dorham Place, Dayton, Ohio, were arrested and charged with trafficking in Heroin and possession of Heroin — both felonies of the second degree.

The arrests came after a search warrant was executed at 907 Bertha Ave., Portsmouth, Ohio, at 11:44 a.m. Friday by the Southern Ohio Drug Task Force with the assistance of detectives from the Portsmouth Police Department and the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office.

Detectives seized approximately 12 grams of suspected heroin as well as digital scales and additional drug trafficking-related evidence.

Dewberry and Spann were placed in the Scioto County Jail and are to be arraigned at 9 a.m. Monday in Portsmouth Municipal Court.

Portsmouth Police Chief Robert Ware says the heroin epidemic is the result of a combination of factors.

“We have estimated over the years the 85-90 percent of our crime is drug related, but there is also the issue of poverty, which isn’t getting any better,” Ware said.

The case will be submitted to the Scioto County Prosecutors Office to be presented to a Scioto County grand jury for the consideration of additional felony drug offenses.

Ware and Scioto Cojunty Sheriff Marty V. Donini said anyone wishing to leave drug information for the Southern Ohio Drug Task Force can contact the Task Force tip line at 740-354-5656 or email [email protected]. All information will be kept confidential and anonymous.
