Benefit for Floyd on Friday

Nearly two weeks after the tragic death of a local dirt-track racer, Charlie Floyd, the local racing community will once again convene at the Southern Ohio Speedway, for the first time since the tragedy on April 15th. Southern Ohio Speedway recently announced Friday’s races will be a Charlie Floyd Memorial Benefit Race, with proceeds going directly to the family of the 26 year-old racer who lost his life after a horrendous accident at the track.

“We’re very overwhelmed by the support of the local community and the racing community for what all they’re doing to try to raise money for this family,” Southern Ohio Speedway Public Relations Director T.J. Layne said. “That’s what this race is all about, a benefit for the family to try and raise money for them.

“We’re really looking forward to running this race in honor of Charlie’s memory and hoping to raise a lot of money for the family.”

Floyd, who was also a member of the Porter Township Fire Department, was critically injured in a wreck on lap 12 of the Super Late Model feature and ultimately succumbed to his injuries from the wreck a few days later. The speedway is promoting a benefit in his memory on Friday, April 30, 2016, to help raise money for his family, as the racing community attempts to move forward after losing one of its own.

On Friday night, those attending the races at Southern Ohio Speedway will be given several opportunities to financially support Floyd’s family.

The Minford Volunteer Fired Department will have a “Pass the Boot” fundraising activity Friday evening. A fireman’s boot will be passed around the grandstands from person to person who will be encouraged to put some money in the boot for Floyd’s family.

Southern Ohio Speedway will be selling sponsorships for the race on Friday night as well. Businesses, race teams, individuals, etc., can purchase a sponsorship for $99.00. “The sponsorship will include a name, website link, and phone number to be posted on the event page on our website, and an individual post on our Facebook page, a long with multiple announcements over the PA on Friday night,” Layne stated in a press release.

Layne stated the sponsorships can be purchased several different ways.

“(You) simply send a Facebook private message to the Southern Ohio Speedway page, e-mail us at [email protected], or contact track promoter Don and Robbie Harmon, or myself, and let us know you want to do a sponsorship,” Layne stated. “Sponsorships can be paid for at each ticket gate on race-day, or can be mailed to H&L Motorsports, LLC, 311 Township Road 102, Ironton, Ohio, 45638.”

Checks, for sponsorships, should be made out to H&L Motorsports, LLC, and should have Charlie Floyd Benefit Sponsorship written in the memo section.

The speedway will also be holding a special raffle, which the winner will receive two five-year season pit passes to Southern Ohio Speedway. Layne estimated the value of the prize to be $3,500.

The Porter Township Fire Department will be on-hand Friday evening, and will be doing several fundraising activities throughout the night. Porter FD will be selling 50/50, or split the pot tickets during the night’s events. The fire department will also be selling raffle tickets for $10.00 each. Prizes announced for the raffle include gift cards to are businesses, as well as racing memorabilia and firearms.

In addition to sponsorships, the boot, and a raffle, Tony and Anessa Sparling will have their smoker with them Friday night at the track and will be selling several food items to help raise money for Floyd’s family.

All proceeds from the fundraising activities will go to the family of Charlie Floyd, according to Layne.

Special ceremonies are scheduled for Friday evening as well, as a Charlie Floyd flag will be flown at half-mast to remember the fallen driver. This will be done prior to the start of the hot laps. A missing man formation will be done as well, just before the start of the night’s AMRA STARS Late Model feature.

Friday’s racing card will feature the first appearance of the AMRA STARS Late Model Series, in which the drivers will race toward a $2,000.00 checkered flag purse.

The AMRA Modifieds, Fastrak Crate Late Models, Sport Mods, and Eduros will also be featured Friday night at Southern Ohio Speedway for the Charlie Floyd Memorial Benefit Race.

Gates for the Charlie Floyd Memorial Benefit Race will open at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, with hot laps starting at 7:15 p.m. General admission is $15.00 for ages 17 and up, $5.00 for ages 13-16, $2.00 for ages seven-12, and those aged six and under are free. Pit passes are available as well for $30.00 for ages 13 and up, $20.00 for ages seven-12, and free for those six and under.
