“The Music Man” comes to Burg

Is music a big deal in Wheelersburg? Well, the answer can be learned by visiting Wheelersburg High School this weekend, to watch the collected work of over 100 students, bring to life a grand production of “The Music Man!”

By turns wicked, funny, warm, romantic and touching, The Music Man is family entertainment at its best. Meredith Wilson’s six-time, Tony Award winning musical comedy has been entertaining audiences since 1957 and is a family-friendly story to be shared with every generation.

“Every year we’ve tried to make our performance a district-wide production, we like to involve as many young kids as possible. This production actually features kids from grades third through 12,” said Vocal Music Director Emily Harner.

The Music Man follows fast-talking traveling salesman Harold Hill as he cons the people of River City, Iowa into buying instruments and uniforms for a boys’ band he vows to organize — this despite the fact he doesn’t know a trombone from a treble clef. His plans to skip town with the cash are foiled when he falls for Marian the librarian, who transforms him into a respectable citizen by curtain’s fall.

“We’ve brought in an professional orchestra to make this more of a professional production for the kids,” said Harner, “we’re really excited to show the community what we’ve been working on.”

“The Music Man” will open curtain Friday, April 8 at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 9 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, April 10 at 3 p.m. Admission is $25 for reserved seats, $10 for general admission, and $5 for students. The performance will be held in the cafeteria at Wheelersburg High School. All proceeds benefit the continuation of Wheelersburg’s music programs.
