The Valley Indians picked up a pair of victories Saturday to begin their season.
Gavin Yazell tossed a five-inning no hitter as Valley cruised past Cross Lanes Christian (W. Va.) 12-0 in the first game. The Indians prevailed over Chesapeake 6-5 in the second contest.
Yazell was one walk — the first batter of the game — from tossing a perfect game. Yazell faced the minimum number of batters as the lone base runner was thrown out attempting to steal second.
Blake Howard and Tanner Cunningham collected a pair of RBIs a piece while Drew Wolford recorded an RBI triple.
In the second game, Eli Harr picked up the victory, pitching 6 1/3 innings. He allowed five runs (four earned) while striking out five batters. Howard collected the save by forcing a ground out with bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Indians trailed 4-0 but scored three runs in the fourth and fifth innings to complete the comeback. Harr was as dangerous behind the plate as he was on the mound. Harr recorded a double, RBI and scored a run.
Howard and Derek Burk eached singled and scored a run against the Panthers.
