All state highways in northeast Kentucky remain snow covered and slick as road crews continue to plow and treat with salt where needed. A state of emergency remains in effect statewide, and travel is not advised.

As of 5:30 a.m., the following conditions were reported by the Kentucky Department of Highays District 9:

— Weather: Light snow

— Air Temperature: 21

— Road Temperature: 19

Allen Blair, Information Officer for District 9 says it is currently lightly snowing, with diminishing snowfall in all counties. Accumulations range from 6 inches to 14 inches with the heavier to the east and along I-64. Crews are plowing and increasing salt treatment where possible. Roadways remain covered. All routes are being addressed, with priority to interstate and A routes.

Crews are plowing & treating: Bath, Boyd, Carter, Elliott, Fleming, Greenup, Lewis, Mason, Nicholas, Rowan counties

Crews manning some 75 state and contract plow trucks, as well as graders, will remain out in force, continuing to push snow and treat roadways on 12-hour shifts today. More snow and high winds are expected. Plowed and treated roadways may re-cover quickly depending upon the rate of precipitation.

Due to the sheer volume of snow, it may take days for roads to return to their normal conditions. Crews will continue to focus on clearing high priority routes and shift to rural, low volume roads once those major routes are clear.

Unnecessary travel should be avoided, and anyone who must travel should exercise extreme caution and be well-prepared for changing conditions. They should allow additional time to arrive at their destination, driving at a speed well-below the posted limit and maintaining a safe following distance behind other vehicles.

In northeast Kentucky, District 9 crews work have about 20,000 tons of salt and 75 snow plows, salt spreaders and other equipment available to keep 2,000 miles of state highways passable.

Highways are plowed on a priority basis, meaning heaviest-traveled roads – such as I-64, Industrial Parkway, AA Highway, US 60, KY 32, US 68, KY 11, etc., are cleared first.
