Glenwood stunned by late three

NEW BOSTON – The Glenwood Lady Tigers battled the Rock Hill Redwomen to see who would go on to face the Minford Lady Falcons in the championship game at the 2015 Glenwood Holiday Classic. In a game that saw Glenwood jump out to an early lead, and then trail by as much as 12 points in the third quarter, a three-point score with only 14 seconds left in the game would give Rock Hill the deciding one point lead, and victory over Glenwood, 51-50.

As a result of the win, the Redwomen will face off against the Lady Falcons in the 2015 Glenwood Holiday Classic Championship Game. Glenwood will square off against Wellston in the consolation game.

Glenwood jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead over Rock Hill in the opening minutes of the game. Ali Hamilton started the run for Glenwood with a quick layup, followed by two three-pointers by Cammy Oiler, and Eden Howard.

As the Lady Tigers held the Redwomen scoreless for the first three minutes of the game, it looked like Glenwood had Rock Hill confused and outplayed.

However, the Redwomen would turn things around, and go on a 13-0 run. Rock Hill’s Jill Hairston would hit back to back three-pointers to propel the Redwomen ahead of the Lady Tigers 13-8 with a little over a minute left in the first quarter.

Mariah Buckley would end the Rock Hill run by scoring five points in the last minute of the quarter to tie the game 13-13, as time expired in the first.

The Redwomen limited the Lady Tigers to just two points in the first four and a half minutes of the second quarter, taking a 21-15 lead.

Both teams would battle back and forth in the remaining minutes of the second quarter, but Rock Hill managed to maintain their six point lead, 32-26, as time expired in the half.

Hairston caused trouble for Glenwood in the early moments of the third quarter, hitting two more three-pointers, to give Rock Hill their biggest lead of the night, 12 points.

Glenwood would rally, cutting the Rock Hill lead in half, six points, with about three minutes left in the third. A layup by Howard cut the Rock Hill lead to only two points, when Buckley would hit a layup to tie the game, 38-38, with only a minute and change left in the third quarter.

By the end of the third, Rock Hill regained the lead, 40-38.

The fourth quarter was a battle of wills and clutch shooting.

Kacie Russell increased the Rock Hill lead with a three in the opening minute of the fourth.

Glenwood continued to battle, as Hamilton was fouled as she scored on a layup to cut the Redwomen lead to only a single point. She tied the game, 43-43 after hitting her free throw, and would then give Glenwood its first lead, 44-43, since the opening minutes of the game, after hitting another free throw, when she was fouled again.

Buckley gave Glenwood a three point lead, 46-43, sinking both of her free throws after Russell picked up her fourth personal foul, with 3:45 left in the game.

Russell fouled out of the game 40 seconds later, finishing the night with only nine ponits, 12 shy of reaching 1,000 career varsity points.

Kyliegh Noel erased Glenwood’s lead, tying the game, 46-46, with 1:55 left in the game.

Glenwood retook the lead after a Buckley layup which was assisted by Hamilton on a fast break, but the lead would be short lived as Rock Hill tied the game, 48-48, with only 55 seconds remaining.

Oiler hit a clutch shot to give the Lady Tigers a 50-48 lead several seconds later.

Unfortunately for Glenwood, Hairston struck again with another three-pointer with 14 seconds remaining to give Rock Hill the deciding 51-50 lead, and eventual victory.

Glenwood coach Kayla Wiley declined to comment by press time.
