King’s Daughters Medical Center Ohio announced today that it has been recognized as a 2014 Top Performer on Key Quality Measures® by The Joint Commission, the leading accreditor of health care organizations in the United States.

King’s Daughters Ohio was recognized as part of The Joint Commission’s 2015 annual report “America’s Hospitals: Improving Quality and Safety,” for attaining and sustaining excellence in accountability measure performance for Surgical Care and Immunization. King’s Daughters Ohio is one of only two hospitals in the tri-state area and 1,043 hospitals out of more than 3,300 eligible hospitals in the United States to achieve the 2014 Top Performer distinction.

“You have standards that within that are core measures that are focused around improvement of patient outcomes, patient care overall,” Kim Grooms, KDMC Ohio administrator, told the Daily Times. “We have those standards put into place that the Joint Commission gives us guidance as to how we should best look to continuing to improve the patient’s experience in their overall care.”

Grooms said when the guidelines are set up, the facility follows them to look at how they implement their processes to support the standards. By implementing those standards, the goal is to avoid things such as infections.

The Top Performer program recognizes hospitals for improving performance on evidence-based interventions that increase the chances of healthy outcomes for patients with certain conditions. The performance measures included in the recognition program including heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, surgical care, children’s asthma, inpatient psychiatric services, stroke, venous thromboembolism, perinatal care, immunization, tobacco treatment and substance use.

To be a 2014 Top Performer, hospitals had to meet three performance criteria based on 2014 accountability measure data, including, achieving a cumulative performance of 95 percent or above across all reported accountability measures; achieving performance of 95 percent or above on each and every reported accountability measure with at least 30 denominator cases and has at least one core measure set that had a composite rate of 95 percent or above, and within that measure set, achieve a performance rate of 95 percent or above on all applicable individual accountability measures.

“In this past year we had achieved a zero in the number of surgical infections,” Kerry Tague, Director, HR, Community and Physician Relations, said. “You can’t get any better than that. So when they’re going to make a choice as to where they’re going to have their surgery done, you want to come to the place that offers the highest quality care and you’re less likely to get an infection and you’re most like to have the most positive outcome.”

“We understand what matters most to patients at King’s Daughters Ohio is the quality and safety of the care they receive. That is why we have made it a top priority to achieve positive patient outcomes through evidence-based care processes,” said Kim Grooms, KDMC Ohio administrator. “King’s Daughters Ohio is proud to be named a Top Performer as it recognizes the knowledge, teamwork and dedication of our entire hospital staff.”
