MOUNT VERNON, Ohio – The Shawnee State men’s basketball program obtained 17 points from Dante Dunston as well as 13 points and nine rebounds from Ethan Moffatt, but the Bears could not overcome the strong Marian (Ind.) offense as the Knights 47.1 percent shooting from the field and 50 percent from distance stymied Shawnee State in the final game for the Bears at the Cougar Homecoming Classic at Ariel Arena in Mount Vernon on Saturday afternoon.

Even though Shawnee State was able to beat Marian on the glass by a 39-35 tally – including an 18-8 advantage on the offensive glass – the Bears weren’t able to convert on many of their shot attempts as Shawnee State shot 20-of-60 to accumulate a 33.3 percent ratio from the floor while also being held to 3-of-12 from beyond the arc in shooting 25 percent from distance.

The Knights would start the contest by going on a 21-9 tilt during the first 14 minutes of the contest before the Bears used the efforts of Dunston and Nick Tingle to cut the deficit to a 24-18 mark with 3:46 to play in the opening half.

After Marian went on a 6-0 run to extend the lead back out to a 30-18 advantage, Shawnee State responded with a 6-0 spurt of its own behind four more tallies by Dunston to cut the gap to six at the halftime break.

Through the opening 4:05 of play in the second and final frame, the Bears would continue to press the Knights as Nick Gouch and Ethan Moffatt combined for five points to cut the deficit to as little as three with 16:55 to play in the second half.

Marian, however, would kick its offense into overdrive as the Knights went on a 19-4 run to push the advantage to a 51-33 tally with 10:04 left to play in the contest.

Behind the workmanlike efforts of Dunston and Moffatt, Shawnee State would find a way to claw back as the pair combined to score all 15 of the Bears’ points during a 15-2 tilt to cut the deficit to five with 6:23 to play in the game.

The Bears, however, would run out of steam from there as Marian would go on an 11-2 tilt to push the lead to double-digits with 3:11 left en route to the victory.

With today’s contest in the books, Shawnee State will receive four days of rest before returning to the Frank & Janis Waller Gymnasium for its first Mid-South Conference battle of the year. The bout, which will be against No. 18-ranked Campbellsville, will start at 8 p.m.
