BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Shawnee State women’s soccer team could not overcome a strong Campbellsville offensive attack as goals from Aris Kuntz, Mhairi Fyfe and Rachel Veatch, as well as an own goal by the Bears, led the Tigers to a 4-0 victory over Shawnee State in the Mid-South Conference Quarterfinals at Lovers Lane Park in Bowling Green, Ky. on Thursday evening.
Throughout the contest, the Bears (9-9-1) would be outshot by a significant margin as Campbellsville (17-1) grabbed a 14-7 shot advantage, including an 8-3 advantage on shots in the first half alone. In the aforementioned frame, Kuntz would strike on an assist from Fyfe in the 16th minute and an own-goal by Shawnee State allowed Campbellsville to go into the half with a comfortable margin.
The second half proved to be a closer bout as after a goal from Fyfe to make the score 3-0, the Bears would begin to produce some offensive chances of their own. In the 50th, 52nd, and 69th minutes, Shawnee State would put shots on goal via Jenny Campbell, Schuyler Jones, and Mollie King.
However, all three chances were thwarted by Amanda Howard, who would make five saves without allowing a goal, to keep the Bears from painting the scoreboard. A final shot by Campbell in the 87th minute would also be stopped by the sophomore goalkeeper to set up the game’s final score.
Thursday evening’s contest would also be the final bout for four Shawnee State players –Jones, King, Erin Phillips, and Tasha Wilson.
The senior quadron won 36 games as members of the women’s soccer program, obtaining records of .500 or better in each of the past three seasons as well as the program’s first playoff victory last season in a 1-0 win over Georgetown during last year’s Mid-South Conference Quarterfinals. This past season, each member of the senior class made the All-Academic Mid-South team as the program put a record nine individuals on the aforementioned list. The 2015 season marks the third year in a row where every senior made the Academic All-MSC team.
With the start of Thursday’s evening contest, Jones and Wilson will set at the top of the heap in games played as both players participated in their 76th and final contest as a member of the Bears’ women’s soccer program. Wilson, who set the record for most games started in a career in Shawnee State’s previous contest against Kentucky Christian, never missed a single game or start with the program.
With the victory, Campbellsville will advance to the Mid-South Conference Semifinals, where the Tigers will play No. 3-seeded Georgetown.
