GREENUP COUNTY, Ky. — Kentucky Transportation Cabinet(KYTC) District 9 crews will temporarily close KY 1 in Greenup County for drainage pipe replacements beginning Wednesday, Oct. 21, crews will close KY 1 at mile marker 7.2 just south of Long Branch to dig through the pavement and replace the first pipe. The road will be closed to all traffic from 8 a.m. until about 3 p.m. or completion of all work.

Allen Blair, information officer of KYTC District 9, said crews will be working to replace culverts.

“The crew must cut a trench across the road to remove the old culverts, which are no longer working properly, and replace them with new ones,” Blair said. “Traffic will not be able to pass the work area until the trench is refilled and the roadway reconnected.”

Blair said proper water flow is imperative as it pertains to highways.

“It’s important to keep water flowing properly under and around highways. Clogged or broken pipes can allow water to pool in ditch lines beside roadways or on road surfaces, which over time can break down the roadway causing potholes, breaks in pavement or embankment failures,” he said. “This is proactive maintenance work to prevent future problems and sustain the longevity of the highway.”

During the road closures, traffic may detour using KY 67 the Industrial Parkway and KY 207. Motorists traveling from Grayson to Greenup should use I-64 to connect to KY 67 at the parkway exit. Traffic connecting to KY 207 via KY 3306 (Tunnel Branch Road) should note that Tunnel Branch remains one lane due to a roadside slip.

Blair said they are advising motorists to slow down and travel with caution through work zones, and remember that construction schedules are subject to change due to weather conditions.
