Sierra’s Haven For New and Used Pets, in partnership with Glockner GM Supperstore, will be holding a Pets for Vets event on Saturday. The Pets for Vets program offers are veterans with a military I.D. the opportunity to get a free pet.

The shelter has had a long relationship with the Glockner Family in sponsoring the program.

The event will be held Oct. 17 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Glockner GM Superstore, 4368 U.S. 23 in Portsmouth. At the event veterans will be signed up for the program and instructed to visit Sierra’s Haven to choose an animal.

According to program information, pets are a great source of socialization as well as a great addition to your family. A dog can help with daily exercise and help bring meaning to daily life.

“Glockner sponsored this last year on Veterans Day and it was successful,” said Julie Blackburn a Board of Director’s member of Sierra’s Haven.

Blackburn said a fund has been established at Sierra’s Haven to cover the adoption fees for a veteran wanting to adopt an animal.

She said to promote the program; the shelter will hold various events throughout the year with community partners to highlight the program. Blackburn said the Pets for Vets fund can accept donations from those interested in helping area veterans receive animals. Blackburn said the next Pets for Vets event is scheduled for Veterans Day.

She said the shelter is offering reduced adoption fees to everyone for the month of October.
