SSU Men’s Cross Country holds No. 16

Sports Release

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – For the fifth straight week in 2015 – and sixth consecutive overall – the Shawnee State men’s cross country program finds itself in the NAIA Top 25 Poll as the Bears held their No. 16 overall ranking for the fourth straight week.

Over the past weekend, the men ran at the All-Ohio Championship in Cedarville, Ohio and finished in the top half of a field stacked with NCAA Division I, II, and III opponents along with NAIA schools as the Bears grabbed a 20th place finish in the 47-team field by putting all seven scoring runners inside the top 70.

For Shawnee State, David Jaeger led the way once again for the Bears as the freshman from Liberty Township, Ohio – who was named MSC Runner of the Week on Tuesday – clocked in a time of 26:14.78 to finish in 22nd place in a 189-runner field full of NCAA Division II, III, and NAIA competitors.

Jaeger, however, wasn’t the only Shawnee State runner to finish in the top 25 as Parker Blain used a time of 26:19.93 to finish just five seconds back in 25th place. Six spots behind Blain, fellow sophomore Ethan Richter would run a 26:30.04 to finish in the 31st position.

Cody Redman would allow the Bears to place four runners in the top 50 and allow the underclassmen to sweep the top four positions in the process in running a 26:50.01 in finishing 48th. Upperclassmen Will Doering and Nick McAfee would finish eight and 11 seconds back of Redman in 54th (26:58.70) and 56th (27:01.31), respectively.

Matthew Cheeseman would edge Ryan Stewart for the final scoring slot on the day in running a 27:22.91 to finish in 69th, beating out Stewart’s 75th place time of 27:37.90, to cap off the All-Ohio Championship performance for Shawnee State.

As far as the poll is concerned, Southern Oregon, who was the No. 1 slot in the preseason as well as in the first poll, continues to show the way in the latest version of the NAIA Top 25 Poll. Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) and Indiana Wesleyan remain in the second and third positions, respectively.

For the third weekend in a row, the male harriers will be in action as the Bears will run in the NAIA Preview in Charlotte, N.C. on Friday, Oct. 9.
