The City of Portsmouth is issuing a notice of examination for the position of firefighter in the Portsmouth Fire Department.

Jo Ann Aeh, interim executive secretary for the Civil Service Commission, said all United States citizens are eligible. Applicants must be 21 years of age, have a high school education or the equivalent. Successful applicants must pass a rigid physical examination prior to appointment as a firefighter. State law forbids the original appointment of a firefighter on or after their forty-first birthday.

Applications are available in the Solicitor’s Office on the second floor of the Municipal Building. Aeh said applications may be picked up there and completed applications must be received in the solicitor’s office on or before Thursday, Nov. 5, 2015 at 2 p.m. Applications must be typed or printed in ink.

Aeh said a written examination will be conducted on Saturday, Nov. 7, at 11 a.m. at the Notre Dame Activity Center, 2310 Sunrise Ave. (CAY) in Portsmouth. She said all applicants must report to the testing site between 10:30 a.m. and 10:40 a.m., with two pencils and one pen.

Veterans of the Armed Services of the United States who are residents of the State of Ohio who qualify and receive a passing grade on the examination will receive an additional twenty percent on the examination pursuant to state law and local Civil Service Rules.

A complete copy of Form DD-214 must be attached to the application for the examination. Failure to attach such proof of honorable discharge will result in disqualification for veteran’s credit and proof of discharge must be submitted to the Civic Service Commission prior to the deadline for applications.
