On Saturday, the team of Kroger’s and the Portsmouth Police Department made it easy for people to dispose of their outdated medications Saturday morning by cordoning off a section of the store’s parking lot and providing a canopy and boxes in which people could empty their pill bottles.
“We’re doing Drug Take Back,” Samantha Crank, a Portsmouth Kroger employee said. “Anybody who wants to bring in any unused medications, we have law enforcement officers to take that in and then they will properly dispose of it.”
Earlier in the week consumers were encouraged to drive through the Kroger parking lot and drop off their medications to Portsmouth police officers and several officers were on hand Saturday morning.
“Kroger partners with Cardinal Health and the DEA to make this happen,” Crank said.
According to the Office of Diversion Control of the U.S. Department of Justice Drug Enforcement Administration, the National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medications.
“This is to help get unwanted medications out of your cabinet and get them off the street,” Nick Saltsman, a Portsmouth Kroger employee said.
At the same time Saturday, the Greenup County Health Department (GCHD) partnered with the Kentucky State Police (KSP) to host a Take Back event on the parking lot of the GCHD in Greenup, Ky.
