After an SOC II Championship in 2014, the West High School golf team is ready for a repeat — and their first match of 2015 couldn’t have started any better.
Lead by medalist Jordan Tieman, the West came away with their first win of the season by shooting a combined score of 179 on Tuesday afternoon at Shawnee State Golf Course.
“It’s really nice to start off the season with a win,” first-year West golf coach Kevin Downey said. “We didn’t win our first match last season, so it’s nice to have momentum, especially against a good team like Waverly.”
The Senators finished nine strokes ahead of the Tigers, the match’s second-place finishers. West also beat out Clay, Valley and Northwest for their first team victory of the season.
Tieman finished his day with a nine-hole score of 35, six shots ahead of second-place finisher Wyatt Large of Clay. Marty Knitel, Trenton Cole and Aaron Dyer rounded out West’s top finishers, all of whom shot 50 and below.
Tieman, a junior fresh off winning Player of the Year in his age group on the Tri-State Junior Golf Tour, will look to challenge for SOC Player of the Year against last year’s champion, Mitchell McFarland of Wheelersburg.
“It’s going to be really need to watch Jordan and Mitchell, as well as Christian Downey of Valley and the Hendersons from Waverly this season,” Kevin Downey said.
Though all of the participating teams at Tuesday’s match are members of the SOC, the match won’t count toward the conference standings. The first conference match will take place Aug. 20 at Dogwood Hills Golf Course in Chillicothe.
Both West and Northwest will hit the links again on Wednesday, as they will join Minford and Wheelersburg in a four-team match at the Elks Country Club.
