Since 1990, Leadership Portsmouth has been a community educational program instrumental in the development of leaders in the region for both the present and the future. A recruitment effort is currently underway to bring in new members to the program.

Lisa Carver, executive director of The Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce, said Leadership Portsmouth is extremely important to the local community.

“Leadership Portsmouth is a vital part of our community. Our area’s future depends on well informed leaders and that’s exactly what leadership Portsmouth is designed to do,” Carver said.

According to Carver, Leadership Portsmouth develops the talents, tapping the energies, and harnessing the resources of our region’s present and future leaders. She said Leadership Portsmouth recognizes that the economic health of our community is linked to the vitality of Portsmouth and to the opportunities afforded all its citizens. Leadership enables and helps forge new collaborative efforts that have a lasting and positive impact on their personal and professional lives and on our community.

Leadership Portsmouth is a comprehensive program that stimulates community involvement. The program goals are to identify existing and potential community leaders, and encourage them to focus on the issues that face Scioto County and its position in the region and the state; instill in these leaders an understanding of “trusteeship”, a sense of personal responsibility for the well being of our community; and develop networking and team-building opportunities.

According to Carver, more than 350 individuals have already graduated from Leadership Portsmouth and many are active leaders in our community.

For those interested in serving others, being proactive in creating solutions for the community, have skills that can help groups work together, and are willing to grow and develop your leadership potential, then you are an excellent candidate for Leadership Portsmouth. Topics generally covered are Courts and Government, Business & Industry, Economic Development, Tourism and Education.
