GREENUP, Ky. — The Franklin County, Ky., Sheriff’s Office has posted a flyer on their Facebook page with a non-traditional appeal: asking drug dealers to turn in their rivals. Greenup County Sheriff Keith Cooper said he is in favor of the idea, and could possibly emulate it in the future.

According to reports, the poster on the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page, which was posted on Monday, dons a marijuana leaf, and words which read, “Is your drug dealing competition costing you money? We offer a free service to help you eliminate your drug competition!”

When asked about Sheriff Pat Melton’s posting of the flyer, Greenup County Sheriff Keith Cooper said he thinks it is a good idea.

“Yes. Where he was asking the dopers to turn each other in? One of my deputies told me about it when I came in today, and I love it, it sounds like a very good idea,” Cooper said.

Cooper said he will keep his eye on Melton’s Office to see what type of results the flyer creates.

“If he has any success with it, it is something that I would definitely do here at my office. During growing season especially, we usually put a little request in the local Greenup paper asking people if they find any illegal growing activity to let us know,” Cooper said. “We have a lot of hunters, fox hunters and coon hunters, and squirrel hunters mostly in August and September because that is when weeds start to get big, so we ask them if they come across anything to turn them in.”

Cooper said his department accepts all valid tips that can be helpful in eradicating illegal drug activity in Greenup County.

“Now, if they will turn each other in that would suit me just fine, so we may try that,” he said. “Anything that we can do that we think is going to help us get a handle on the drugs in our community, we will try any of it. We will take tips from anybody, it doesn’t matter who they are, if they are valid tips we would be glad to get them.”
