It was a busy weekend for the Waverly Post 142 baseball team, but the Shockers were up to the challenge.

Waverly improved to 16-2 on the season by sweeping doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday against Chillicothe Post 62 and Washington Court House Post 25.

Though Waverly was listed as the home team for Saturday’s doubleheader with Chillicothe, heavy rains on Friday evening forced the Shockers to move the game to Valley High School. The change of scenery didn’t seem to bother Post 142, as they swept the two games by scores of 10-2 and 8-4.

In game one, the Shockers jumped out to a 4-0 lead and added six insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Waverly’s final rally was highlighted by Minford graduate Matt Joyce, who brought two runners home with a triple.

Waverly High School’s Jake Henderson led the way for the Shockers, going 3-for-3 with three runs. He finished a triple shy of the cycle. Oak Hill’s Shane Spriggs picked up the win on the mound, throwing just over four innings while striking out three.

In Saturday’s nightcap, the Shockers struck first with two runs in the bottom of the first, thanks in part to a Logan Kottenbrook triple to drive in Joyce. Garrett Carmichael drove him home two pitches later with a sacrifice fly.

Though Chillicothe responded by tying the game up in the second, Waverly took control with five unanswered runs over the next three innings. Minford senior Jared Alley got things started with a two-RBI double in the bottom of the third inning. Alley reached base in all four of his plate appearances, scoring a run and driving two in.

South Webster’s Garrett Rawlins picked up the win for the Shockers in game two, throwing five plus innings and allowing just five hits.

Waverly carried the momentum into Sunday, where they swept a doubleheader with Washington Court House Post 25 by scores of 15-0 and 5-2.

It didn’t take long for the Shockers to get started in game one. Carmichael brought two runs in with a single in the third at-bat of the game, and Shockley followed with a homer in the very next at-bat. Waverly took a 4-0 lead before Washington Court House could record an out. Shockley went 4-for-4 in game one, finishing a triple short of the cycle while driving in three runs. Minford graduate Seth Jenkins picked up the win, throwing five innings of shutout ball while striking out 10 batters.

Sunday’s second win didn’t come quite as easy as the first. Washington Court House jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the game, picking up runs in the second and third innings. But in the bottom of the third, Joyce would score Sky Oliver with an RBI single. Later, Carmichael would score Joyce and Joe Henderson with on a deep shot to center, but would be thrown out at the plate trying to stretch a triple into an inside-the-park home run.

The Shockers later added two insurance runs in the sixth, one coming on a solo home run by Carmichael.

Minford’s Alex Powell picked up the win in Sunday’s second game, going 5.2 innings while allowing just two earned runs.

Waverly Post 142 is back in action this weekend, as they will compete in the Dick Kuhn Wood Bat Tournament at Oak Hill High School.
