The 6-8 year old West Senators beat the Wheelersburg Pirates in the Minor League (little league) All-Stars Double-Elimination tournament to claim the District 11 championship.

With a majority of the competitors hailing from Scioto County and Lawrence County, West found itself in the precarious position of facing Wheelersburg who beat the Senators in the title game last season.

In the first matchup, West sent the Pirates to the losers bracket of the tournament. However, Wheelersburg prevailed through the loser’s bracket, which set up a championship rematch.

The Pirates handed the Senators their first loss of the tournament, winning 11-9 in game one, making a comeback in the final inning to force a one-game, winner take all scenario.

However, unlike last season, West found the magic touch, winning 16-9 to claim the title.

“We redeemed ourselves, coming back and burying that loss from last year,” Senators head coach Shad Ford said. “It’s renewed the West-Wheelersburg rivalry in these young girls lives.

“It just shows how determined and tough they are. They don’t have any quit and they just want to win. It’s a special group of girls that want to win.”

Ford is appreciative of his assistant coaches who helped his team through this journey as well as kid’s parents.

“They (assistant coaches) put in a lot of hard work,” Ford said. “Also the girl’s parents. It begins at home, whether it’s throwing a ball against the house or hitting off a tee at home, it doesn’t just start at practice.”

West loses Kyndall Ford, Emily Moore, Kaylor Pickelsimer, Emma Sayre, Brooklyn Pitts, Kamryn Spriggs and Morgan Stiles from this year’s team. The seven girls will graduate to kid-pitch softball.

Rounding out the championship roster are Sydney Krammer, Riley Rotenberry, Maddie Entler, Maci Bradford, Kate Entler, Josey Burton and Maycee Ford.
